Packing Your Own Lunch To Work: A How-To Guide

Buying your lunch outside is cheap, filling and extremely convenient. However, unbeknownst to many, constantly buying food outside can have a relatively large impact on both your wallet and waistline. Instead of constantly eating out during lunch breaks, why not pack your lunch to work instead?
Here’s why you should prepare your own lunch to work, along with two recipes to help you kick start this healthy habit!
1. A Great Way To Save MoneySave money -
With food prices slowly creeping up, this can gradually put a strain on our bank accounts. While we might feel that $5 for a simple plate of noodles or fried kway teow is pretty affordable, but multiply that by the number of working days for the entire year and it can sum up to a significant amount!
2. You Are Your Own Chef!Own chef -
The advantages of preparing your own lunch is that YOU are the masterchef of your kitchen! You can select your favourite ingredients and mix and match as you wish. If you happen to be a huge fan of say, cranberries, you have the option of adding as much as you want to your dish. Check out these two easy-to-make starter recipes to change up your routine and start bringing healthy lunches to work.
1. Skinny Chicken And Avocado Caesar Salad (Serves 2)Skinny Chicken And Avocado Caesar Salad -
Here is a quick recipe if you are a huge fan of greens and proteins.
Ingredients Required (subjected to availability at NTUC FairPrice Finest):
Romaine lettuce, spinach or any greens of your choice
- 2 chicken fillets (about 100g each), skinless and boneless
- Salt for seasoning
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
- 1 egg, boiled and sliced
- 1 avocado, sliced
- Kewpie Japanese Dressing – Sesame Soy Sauce (210ml)  or,
- Mizkan Seasame Flavored Dressing (250ml)
1. Marinate the chicken fillet with the parsley flakes and salt. Heat a non-stick grilling pan or skillet with a drizzle of olive oil.
2. Fry chicken until golden on both sides. Remove the chicken and set aside on a plate. Thereafter, boil the eggs to your liking. In the meantime, wash and chop your lettuce (or your greens of choice).
3. Combine the lettuce with chicken (cut into strips), eggs (halved) and avocado slices. Pour over your desired dressing and you are good to go! Feel free to add on any other desired toppings to your salad, for instance dried mix nuts trail or a toasted breadstick.
If you feel that the portion might be too large, you could either save it for your next meal or pack it for a colleague so as to encourage them to pack their own lunches too!
Alternatively,  you could opt for a classic BLT sandwich if you need more carbohydrates for an extra energy boost!
2. Classic BLT Sandwich (Serves 1) Classic BLT Sandwich -
Ingredients Required (subjected to availability at NTUC FairPrice Finest):
- MEB Vitastic Healthy Soft Sorj Wraps – comes in either wholemeal and rye
- 50g of bacon streaks
- Lettuce (or any greens of your choice)
- 2 slices of tomatoes
- Mizkan Sesame Flavored Dressing (250ml)
1. Cook the bacon on a non-stick pan using olive oil until crispy. Drain on paper towels to rid of excess oil.
2. Toast the wraps. Thereafter, spread a tablespoon of Mizkan Sesame Flavored Dressing on the wrap.
3. Add the lettuce, followed by the tomatoes slices on top. Finish off with the bacon streaks. Feel free to season with salt and pepper.
4. Fold each edge of the wrap, roll it up tightly and you have a healthy wrap for lunch on the go.
